Let’s Play #2: Bomberman Hero

Yet another game I grew up with; well kind of. When I was little, my dad used to play lots of N64 game like Super Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina Of Time and this one. This chapter of the Bomberman series is really great. It was the second bomberman game in 3D (the first one being Bomberman 64). But this one focuses more on a single player story.

The plot is simple: a princess steals a data disk from a random evil empire that is ruling the galaxy but suddently gets kidnapped by the evil villian of the empire. However the princess’ beloved robot escapes with the disk, waiting for Bomberman to come by and get it.

I think I’ve seen something like this in a very very famous movie…right?

But anyway, the game introduces a lot of new mechanics in the series. Bomberman can now move freely, jump, throw multiple bombs, grab on ledges and do the usual stuff you can do in many platformers. Bomberman can travel between the planets of his solar system, and each of one has his own areas and unique mechanics you need to learn to move forward.

Talking about how the game works, here’s how it goes: each planet has different areas, and each area has different levels. You move through them one after another in a very linear way. During the level, a score counter is displayed on the screen; collecting powerups, gems and killing enemies raises your score. At the end of the level you recieve a mark from 1 (worst) to 5 (best) depending how many things you’ve collected and how many enemies you’ve killed. Each level has a maximum amount of score you can get (which is revealed at the end). Getting this score is the only way to get a 5. At the end of each planet all of the marks you got are summed up and you are awarded a medal based on your total mark.

Some areas, however, aren’t so linear. Sometimes a certain level can only be accessed if you find a “secret exit” in the level before it, which adds a little bit of “slow down and explore” to the game.

The difficulty curve is also very well made. If at the begininng you can just throw bombs at every enemy without even caring about them. Later on, enemies will have shields and need to be hit from different parts or at a certain time. Even later on, enemies might need to be attacked with a different type of bomb, so you need to find the right powerup before you can take them. This requires you to stop from your “bomb everything that I see” rush of the first levels, and plan your way through the level if you really want to achieve that 5.

Levels are also very different from each other. From the usual platform levels, to the flying “corridor-style” levels, to the boss levels in which you are restricted in an arena.

Boss fights are also a real challenge in Bomberman Hero, should you want to achieve a mark of 5. On the boss fights, your score starts at 9990 and starts counting down stopping only when the boss is defeated. So basically you get a score based on your time. This is also the only time that you can get a score above the limit (even though you still get a 5.)

A note on my Let’s Play below: Bomberman starts with 4 units of life. Everytime he collects 200 gems he gets a life extend, getting one more unit. Howevey when you reset the game he’ll be back at 4. In my Let’s play however, I decided to use save states in order to don’t lose the extra life units. I made this to give it a “Legend Of Zelda” style, where your life total increases the more you play. However Bomberman can’t have more than 8 life units.
