Let’s Play #38: The Tuttles Madcap Misadventures

Honestly, when I started Lets Playing this game I had actually planned to to another different game, however with Final Fantasy VI (Blind) so close I thought it wouldn’t fit well as I want to keep some variety in the LPs. So after a shooting game (Starfox 64) and a platform (Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland) I hoped that another classic-style platform would fit well.

And here it is: The Tuttles Madcap Misadventures.

Like I said in the LP, I had no idea when did I get this game. Anyway, The Tuttles isn’t just your average platformer as I’ve learned from the internet 75% of the game’s proceeds where given as a donation to a title of charity which helps children suffering serious illness (source).

The story tells us about the Tuttles, the average american family composed by Barbara the mom, Barry the dad, Zack the son and Jess the Daughter, who decide to go on a family vacation to a reinactment of the battle of the Alamo. They get on Barry’s futuristic flying van which has lots of interesting stuff, even an AI who looks like a (fictional) TV star (voiced by William Shatner aka Captain James T. Kirk of Star Trek) and they’re ready to go!

Too bad the van has to crash down several times during their trip forcing one member of the family at a time to go out alone in the wilderness and look for a way to save the family. That’s when the platform part come in. To complete a level, you have to move the family memeber through a 2D environment looking for 4 to 5 objects which will help the family in need, then find the exit of the level.

Of course, it’s not like you’ll be alone enemies are everywhere as traps and hazards are. These things take various different forms throughout the levels from the scorpions to crabs, from mummies, to lizards, from snake, to eagles and annoying coconut throwing monkeys.

One things about the enemies I didn’t really like is that, more or less, they all work in the same way. Combat-wise, taking on a scorpion or a lizard or a crab it’s the same. Jump on them two times and you’re done. Same goes for the cobras, squids and the “angry plants” they all take 3/4 hits and all they do is stand there waiting for you to get close. The only two enemies I found to have some variety are the birds and the monkeys.

As you get to the jungle infact, you’ve been used to deal with enemies which dealt damage on contact, but the monkeys will instead throw coconuts from the distance so your strategy in approaching them must change if you don’t want to lose health every time.

The flying enemies (parrots, condors, eagles, etc.) add a difficulty layer expecially for completionists like me who want to collect every single item there is in the levels. You see, at the end of a level the game will tell you how many objects you’ve collected out of the maximum amount. While most of the stuff is laid out in the open, enemies also have items with them, so you must defeat them to get thier items.

Problem is, flying enemies tend to be hard to kill since they fly high up, and it’s unlikely you’ll reach them with a jump. That being said it is possible to kill them in a few ways:

  • You can jump into them, getting hurt, but when the charcter is blinking due to damage and you’re invulnerable, jump into the emey again to kill it.

  • Barry can use his second attack to hit flying enemies if they’re just above him.

  • With careful movements, Jess can manipulate her “weapon” to hit flying enemies.

Infact, another thing I like about this game is that characters have different ways of attacking. Barbara will attack with her purse two times in front of her, Barry will swing his gas can in what can be a spin-attack and then a “vertical slash” (which might as well be a way to hit flying enemies as mentioned), Zack uses a kick and a spin attack and additionally while he’s underwater he can kind of swim and make longer jumps, while finally Jess can throw her “weapon” (which is probably supposed to be her cellphone) to hit enemies from quite a distance.

Anyway, even thoguh The Tuttles Madcap Misadventures where sort of a “fill-in” LP to give the channel some variety, I really enjoyed playing through it again. And it has to be mentioned that as you finish the story, you’re able to play the game again, this time with additional levels that you couldn’t play before, which adds a little bit of replay value to the game.
