The lastest remake of a game for the Sega Master system, Ys I is the first game of the niche “Ys” series of action RPGs which deserve more credit than they get.
In Ys I you play as Adol Christin, a red haired adventurer who left his house to wander the world. He evenutally reaches the land of Esteria where a fortune teller asks him to retrieve the six books of Ys before the monsters can, as she saw in a profecy. Adol agrees and has to scour the land for the six books.
The gameplay is pretty straightforward. You bump into enemies to deal damage and stand still to recover health. Bumping into enemies off-center yields a higher chance of hitting without recoil damage, as it is hitting from the side of the back. Defeating monster earns you gold and exp to level up. You can spend gold in towns for healing items, needed to heal in dungeons where the passive heal doesn’t work or to buy better weapons and armors.
I have to mention that this game was remade many times along with its direct sequel, Ys II. Many times they both games where inclused in the same pack. That’s the case for the remake for the Turbografix which is considered by many to be the best version of the two games and it’s the only one which features voice acting. It’s the same version of which you’ll see clips of in my LP.
In short, this is Ys I. It’s a pretty fun game to play and this remake knocked it out of the park. There’s a lot more contnent that doesn’t feel out of place and everything flows well. Boss fights where also modified a bit but they still feel a lot like the originals. I only miss the voice acting, but that’s a minor complaint after all.
